It’s becoming more common for families to want to both acknowledge the grief, while making room to remember their life. They want stories, music, and a place to feel like the person they loved is surrounding them. That’s why a Celebration of Life is being chosen more often. It’s a way to both mourn their loss, and remember how lucky we were to have them.

It’s refusing to let the loss be the whole story.

It’s a remembrance where grief and happiness share the same room. A celebration of life isn’t pretending the loss isn’t there or hurting. It’s refusing to let the loss be the whole story. Wanting to share happy memories doesn’t mean you are avoiding grief. It means you loved them and want to feel that love and joy as well. There are so many reasons you loved and cared for them. This is a chance to fill a room with people willing to share those feelings and emotions. It can’t remove the grief, but it can shine some light on the darkness.

Grief will be there, but it doesn’t need to be the only guest.

Everyone has their favourite stories and memories. Some of them will have become family legends or well told tales. But this is a chance to also share the small meaningful moments, the things that meant the most to you and shaped you into who you are.  Some people may need eulogies, but others need stories shared about the burnt turkey, that crazy rain storm or the quiet walk you shared. It’s a chance to both share who you remember, and soak in the memories of other loved ones. Some Celebrations of Life choose to have live microphones or speeches, while others prefer to share memories in smaller groups. You can choose to celebrate the way that works best for your family.

One of the things we hear most after a celebration of life is how much it felt like that loved one was surrounding the room. Remembering a loved one is often more than just sharing memories. It’s looking through their favourite photos or family albums. It’s being able to display their favourite things, the things that show off their personality and life. It might be that hat they never took off, souvenirs from their travels, awards they won or favourite sports memorabilia. Anything that brought them joy, and reminds others of them.

A story told alone is a memory. But a story told aloud,

in a room full of people who knew them becomes proof. This person lived, they made an impact and they mattered to more than just you. Grief can be a very isolating experience. It can make you feel like you’re the only one hurting or carrying their memory along. But a Celebration of Life allows you to spend time in a room full of people who feel the same. The photos, the songs, the stories they all help. But a life is made of other people, and so is a Celebration of Life.

This is often the time when people stop just missing them, and start recognizing them in their lives again. All the pieces of your loved one that will forever be apart of you.
